Highmark has staked its claim as the largest health insurer in the Keystone state.
A licensee of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association, the firm covers some
4 million people in central and western Pennsylvania, as well as the Lehigh Valley.
It operates elsewhere in the state through partnerships with other insurers
and provides administrative and network access services nationally. In Pennsylvania
and neighboring West Virginia, Highmark sells Medicare Advantage and prescription
drug plans to seniors. Other subsidiaries (not operating under the
BCBS license) provide dental insurance, vision care, and other products and services
nationwide. The firm agreed to merge with Independence Blue Cross in 2007.
