Independence Blue Cross provides health insurance and related services to more than
3 million members in the Philadelphia area. The company's plans include traditional
indemnity, Keystone Health Plan East (HMO and POS), AmeriHealth (HMO),
and Personal Choice (PPO). Independence Blue Cross also offers dental, vision,
and Medicare supplement coverage, as well as workers' compensation, life, and disability
insurance. Through its subsidiaries the company also provides third-party
administration and pharmacy benefits management services. Independence Blue
Cross was founded as the Associated Hospital Service of Philadelphia in 1938;
it agreed to merge with Pennsylvania insurer Highmark in 2007.
